Rural Women Initiatives for Transformation & Empowerment
Rural Women Initiatives for Transformation & Empowerment project will be implemented in two (2) municipalities in the province namely: Mabinay and Jimalalud. The choice of the municipalities was based on the poverty map of Peace and Equity Foundation where these municipalities are considered priority development areas. The location of the municipalities also ensure that Tuburan programs is strategically spread and reaches out to larger number of women. Mabinay is located in the central part while Jimalalud is located in the northern part of the province.
Mabinay is about 87 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital-Dumaguete City. A land lock municipality, Mabinay claims a total land area of 36,226.35. It is composed of 32 barangays making it one of the biggest municipality in the province. Mabinay has a population of 67,001 with a growth rate of 4.10% which is high for an interior town. The average household size in 1990 was 5 per household. Mabinay is an agricultural town with agriculture as the main source of economic activity. The result of scanning by Tuburan show that 95% of the respondents do not own lands.
Jimalalud, a 4th class municipality, is located in the northern part of the province and is about 97.7 kilometers from Dumaguete City. It has a total land area of of about 14,673 hectares. Total population is 26,756 with an average household size of 5.2. Of the 28 barangays, 8 are located in the coastal area while 20 are situated inland. Like Mabinay, Jimalalud is an agricultural town. It is one of the poorest municipality in terms of income and one of the lowest in Internal Revenue Allotment.
A community of women, men, and families living in justice, mutuality, well being and hope, in harmony with the whole of creation.
Enabling women in Oriental Negros, especially the disadvantaged in rural areas, to uphold their human rights, articulate and act on their common goals with regard to society, culture and the natural environment.
By end of 2023, Tuburan aims to have achieved the following end results:
1. Empowered rural women and communities capable of adequately responding to and addressing women’s issues and problems;
2. Increased women’s participation in governance;
3. Institutionalization of community mechanisms protecting all forms of gender-based violence
4. Increased initiatives of women and communities for the protection of the environment
The peasant women is Tuburan’s target group. Moreover, women in fishing and women in the minority groups, if any, will be the beneficiaries of the core program components in the project sites.
IV. PROGRAMS & SERVICES
Facilitates capacity-building of women to organize and effectively manage their organizations so that they can respond to their identified needs, support sustainable programs and be effective agents for social change. Different types of organizations may be formed.
Knowledge and Capability Building
Raises awareness on discrimination against oppression of women and their potentials. Activities include seminar-workshops on women’s issues and concerns, gender awareness, governance, environment and health, training of second-line leaders a modules development.
Advocacy and Networking
Facilitates for campaigns, mobilizations, alliance-building to promote women’s rights and participation in community affairs. Conducts interventions in VAWC (Violence Against Women and their Children) cases in cooperation with government agencies and non-government and people’s organization.
Provide opportunities for women to engage in principled and financially rewarding economic activities that would help them gain access to and control of resources. Trainings and seed capital, financial assistance for livelihood projects and small business enterprises e.g. individual IGPs, family entrepreneurship, food services are made available to women’s organization.
